Reent Johlfs was born December 21, 1855 in Jever, Germany to Reent Johlfs and Katharina Maria Theilen. He was baptized January 30, 1856 in the Lutheran faith. He immigrated to America in 1881 at the age of 26. Initially he settled in Sterling, Illinois before moving to Plymouth County, Iowa.

Gesine was born September 9, 1855 in Oldenburg, Germany. She was baptized October 7, 1855 in the Lutheran faith. Gesine immigrated to America at the age of 26 on February 18, 1882 aboard the Elbe. The ship sailed from Bremen to New York. While living in Sterling, Illinois, she reportedly worked as a maid and waitress in a rooming house.

Reent and Gesine were married October 28, 1885 in Remsen, Iowa. They became naturalized citizens December 17, 1889. Around 1893, they moved to Murray County, Minnesota and settled in Fenton Township where they operated a farm.

They were the parents of 5 children: Fred (1883), Barney (1889), Theresa (1890), Henry (1892), and Katherine (1894). Reent died at age 58 on September 9, 1914 (on Gesine's 59th birthday) of Bright's Disease (now known as nephritis or kidney disease). Gesine died at the age of 62 on September 4, 1918. They are both buried in St. Columba cemetery in Iona.
